This page contains very graphic images.

If you do not wish to see severe injuries

PLEASE do not scroll down.

I work very hard to heal wounds

and make scars as small as possible.

Horses are very resilient animals

and can heel much better than some people think.

As we say "If there is something around for a horse to get hurt on they will."

If you ever have a horse injured and are not equipped or

knowledgable in that area

your first step should be to call your veterinarian.

After doing so, that is where the aftercare comes in.

If you are in a situation where you do not have the time,

knowledge, facility or "stomach" to care for the injury,

that is where people like us come in.

Hopefully you will never need to care for an injury.

However, if you do, make sure your horse gets the best care possible.

This is Little Man - 4 days after injury

He was caught in a somewhat strange place, during a Thunder and Lightning storm.

He has been in that particular pasture before but not very often.

He got into some wire and downed trees.

His owner found him almost immediately so he quickly took him to the vet.

After that he spent several weeks with us.

Which of course resulted in a full recovery.

This is Little Man's chest after 7 weeks of care.

His chest wound was the worst.

His hind leg cut was farely deep, however it healed very well.

The rest of his wounds look bad, but were surface wounds.

With care and sunblock they healed perfect.

This is Little Man with a full recovery.

He is a good boy with a very caring owner.

This is Madeline

She had very severe injuries to her leg.

Her owner was going to put her down.

We fortunately had ownership signed over to us.

Her injuries were caused by the "horse safe" electrobraid rope.

They did not keep the rope tight or hot.

Therefore when hay was thrown close to the fence and the horse lays in it, then

rolls, the fence gets wrapped around the legs.

Maddie's leg after 5 weeks of care.

An injury of this sort takes extreme diligence every day doctoring and care.

Maddie had to have a splint on her leg,

as the injury severed all the tendons on the front of her leg.

With the exposure to air her bone was in serious danger of not healing correctly.

She had to have daily assessment to check for infection.

After a few weeks of touch and go

I decided to let Maddie out for a run.

Still wearing a splint ande with supervision she got to stretch her legs a little.

Maddie and Little Man happened to be here at the same time.

Both were in treatment and both REALLY wanted to get some exercise.

After kicking up their heels for awhile of course their wraps needed re-done!

Madeline made a full recovery, after over 6 months of daily wrap changing.

We originally hoped for just healing enough to carry her own weight. She did so well we thought maybe good enough to carry the weight of being a great broodmare. She healed better than expected and she may even be a trail horse this coming year. She is a beautiful registered Paint mare and was a great patient.

Injuries are inevitable.

However, please do everything you can to prevent them.

INJURY CARE

Horses can get hurt on a million different things.

Barbed wire, high tensile, board fence, woven wire, T-posts, tree branches and more.

As I can remember I have doctored injuries from barbed wire, electrobraid,

board fence, trailer wheel wells, impaled on tree branches and T-posts, being kicked,

falling, being bitten, gates, nails, bucket hooks, trailer hitches and more.

Of course horses can get injured on any part of their body, however

they seem to get a higher percentage of injuries on their legs.

Please take all the precautions that you can.

If they do get injured, at least you can feel confident that you did everything you can to prevent it.

Make sure that you are diligent in your care of injuries and follow instructions

from the professionals carefully.

If you are not comfortable doctoring an injury yourself

make sure you contact someone that is.

Time is important with injuries as infections can set in (which can cause permanant damage to tendons/joints etc.), proud flesh can grow and stitches (if necessary) have to be done within a certain time frame after the injury.
